COME TO AND LET US MAKE US A NAME.
There is nothing wrong when we dream of a goal, a vision and are desirous of success. There is nothing wrong with having an aspiration for God said: Occupy till i come. meaning keep yourself busy, innovate, improve and contribute positively and constructively to the world you live in. Indolence is not part of the creator’s goal in our lives. Luke 19:13 and he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. I am a firm believer that one born of a woman can contribute one way or the other to this world before his or her demise. As a Christian and a believer, one of the first duty of man when he comes of age is to earnestly asked his creator the purpose of his being here on earth; where he fits in, what he must do and make it better for himself and other after him; this may be a big contribution or a small one. When we cannot ask these questions and pursue answers we become rudderless drifting wherever circumstance desires for us. The book of proverbs29:18 says, Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
God is never against goals or plans we make for ourselves, nor is he against our ambition. The bible says in the book of Philippians 4:8, ” Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of excellent report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.’ From this passage we can see that it is the motive and intention that is high weight before God as we go for any goal. Our desires to achieve, or to do anything, must be born out of love, selflessness and devoid of envy, jealousy or the spirit of competition or the desire to outdo another person. Most times our motive for doing anything is sinister, impure and question before God. Our project or engagement becomes impure if it spur us into action because we think we can do it better than the other person, we want to get the accolades and we desire to take what we perceive as a ‘shine’ from the other person. When we have ulterior motives attach to our works to get a founding from the government or an organization. The lord has no hands in such a project, even though it appears laudable in the eyes of the beholder.
In the book of Genesis 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Verse 4 of this passage underscore very well their motive to build a laudable project which was not inline with the will of God for them. It looks right and appears to be a wonderful plan, but it was a blatant disobedience to what God says. For one, they want to remain where they are, become great without the hand of God lifting them to that honor.and secondly they want to make a name for themselves: a vision and a plan without putting God. Here was the first challenge of man to God’s sovereignty and a defiance of God’s command to spread. Like God sometimes do in our lives he gave them time, peradventure, they will remember that it is his purpose for man to spread instead of remain in one location. Success makes us forget about God and remove him out of the equation in our lives. we are too occupied like the corporate world, too busy like the commerce to acknowledge the giver of life. Luke 12:18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.
Luke 12:19-20 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? Obviously the man has no room for God and do not see how God fits into his plan. To us as Christians there is no prosperity if we do not use God’s own yardstick to measure our prosperity. Just like God,-Elohim visited the people building the tower and gave his final verdict, so he gave his final verdict to this so called prosperous man. How should you measure success or prosperity in the light of Gods word? The people building the tower had their measure and so too had the rich man, but both were wrong before God. We must learn as Christians to use God’s measurement; then greed, covetousness, strife, ill wish, jealousy and envy will become a thing of the past. We must learn to renew our minds with the word of God now that we are Christian. We support others, not strive we love others not hate, we welcome others not despise and correct others not condemn.
